Abstract

The rapid growth of research in digital logistics, artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, resilience, and circular supply chains exacerbates the fragmentation of logistics knowledge and complicates the explanation of modern logistics systems as holistic socio-technical ecosystems. The purpose of this article is to substantiate the intellectualization of logistics and supply chain management as an integrative conceptual framework and an open research agenda. The methodological foundation includes a targeted conceptual literature review, comparative analysis of related concepts, theoretical synthesis, and logical modeling. The article systematizes contemporary directions in logistics research, identifies their integrative gap, and differentiates intellectualization as a process, an intelligent logistics system as an analytical system type, a conceptual framework as an analytical tool, and a research agenda as a domain for further inquiry. The unit of analysis and the boundaries of the proposed framework are specifically clarified. A mechanistic-process model of intellectualization is proposed, in which human intelligence, organizational memory and learning capacity, inter-organizational collective intelligence, and artificial intelligence – through knowledge sharing, coordination, organizational learning, and human oversight of algorithmic decisions – are transformed into adaptive capabilities of the logistics system. Boundary conditions and risks of intellectualization are identified, including algorithmic opacity, poor data quality, platform dependency, cyber risks, and the loss of human expertise. Four theoretical propositions regarding causal relationships within the logistics system are formulated, along with a separate methodological proposition on changing the unit of analysis and an institutional proposition on the journal’s role. The scientific contribution lies in distinguishing intellectualization from digitalization and AI, constructing a testable system of propositions, and shaping the Research Agenda. A limitation of the study is its theoretical and conceptual nature, which requires further operationalization and empirical testing.
