Abstract

The article examines the transformation of merchandising in the context of retail digitalization and intensifying competition. Based on an analysis of classical theories of retail format evolution, the necessity of rethinking traditional approaches to retail space organization with consideration of modern technological innovations is substantiated. Four groups of factors that comprehensively influence merchandising effectiveness are identified: technological, consumer, competitive, and economic. An integrated multi-factor model for evaluating merchandising effectiveness is proposed, which is intended to enable quantitative assessment of each factor group’s contribution to overall retail performance. Practical tools for improving merchandising effectiveness are examined: basket analytics for identifying complementary products, including the use of large language models; checkout automation integrated with loyalty programs; and dynamic customer flow management across various functional zones of the retail space. Recommendations are developed for phased implementation of innovative solutions in retail enterprises, considering the specifics of various formats – from supermarkets to specialized hardware stores.
